File # 2023-2149

The Dawson Creek RCMP are urging the public to be cautious when buying and selling items on social media.

The Dawson Creek RCMP has received a report of a fraudster selling a gazebo on Facebook marketplace who is targeting buyers in the Dawson Creek area. The fraudster asks for money or e-transfers up front before providing the item. The fraudster then stops all contact with the buyer once the payment is received and never provides them with the item.

There are a number of ways to help prevent fraud when buying items from social media. This includes only paying for the item once it is received in person, vetting the seller and their online profile and meeting in a well populated and public area for the transaction to take place.

Please be aware of sellers online and if you have been a victim of a similar online scam then please contact the Dawson Creek RCMP at 250-784-3700.
