File # 2024-5447

A report of an intoxicated person with a knife led to a man being taken into custody Thursday night.

On Feb. 22, 2024, around 10:30 p.m., Kamloops RCMP frontline officers attended the 700-block of Sydney Avenue in response to the report. A suspect was located and arrested for possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose, but was uncooperative.

Due to the presence of a weapon on the uncooperative suspect and the risk it presented to the public and officers, police utilized less lethal intervention options to safely take the man into custody, said Corporal Crystal Evelyn, Kamloops RCMP spokesperson.

An extended range impact weapon (ERIW) which uses sponge-tip rounds, was deployed first. When that was unsuccessful in changing the suspect’s behaviour to allow officers to remove his weapon, police used a conductive energy device.

The suspect was then safely taken into custody and transported to the hospital with minor injuries, for assessment and care, said Cpl. Evelyn. A knife was seized by police as part of the investigation.

Public transit was briefly diverted from the area during the police presence.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone who witnessed or has information related to this incident is asked to please call the Kamloops RCMP Detachment at 250-828-3000 and reference file 2024-5447.
